Recent wins cap off most successful invitational season to date
January 25, 2007 - Mock Trial at UVa's teams returned from winter break with a vengeance by sweeping first and second places in the inaugural Demon Deacon Invitational Tournament, hosted by Wake Forest University. The very next weekend, UVa's teams earned two top-5 finishes at the highly competitive Columbia University Big Apple Invitational Tournament, lifting the program's combined record to 70-8-2.
The Demon Deacon Invitational was the first tournament where
Mock Trial at UVa's stacked teams competed together; 972 and 973 had closed out the end of their first semester by winning the Rhodes Blues City Challenge Invitational and the Tobacco Road Classic Invitational, respectively, in the very same weekend.
At the Demon Deacon, 972 finished with a perfect record of 8-0-0 to claim the tournament title. 973 lost two ballots in hard-fought splits to finish with a final record of 6-2-0, winning second place in a tie-breaker with a CS of 16. Kevin Richards and Daniel Young both took home outstanding attorney awards, while first-year mocker Juliana Yee won the second outstanding witness award of her career.
One weekend later, both teams traveled to New York City to face tough competition at CUBAIT, a tournament known for the quality of its field and the unpredictable nature of its judges. Team 972 finished the weekend in third place, with a record of 7-1-0 and having narrowly lost a tie-breaker to UCLA 965. 973 finished in fifth place, with a record of 5-2-1.
Mock Trial at UVa was the only program in attendance at CUBAIT this year to place two teams in the top 5.
At CUBAIT, Daniel Young won outstanding attorney awards on both the plaintiff and defense sides of the case, while Shikha Gupta won her first outstanding attorney award with 18 ranks on the plaintiff side. Ryann Burke won her second outstanding witness award with 17 ranks on the defense.
After the most successful invitational season in its history,
Mock Trial at UVa looks forward to returning to the E. Barrett Prettyman Federal Courthouse in Washington, D.C. - this time to host the inaugural Capital City Regional Tournament.smrtovnice
