Sam is originally from Virginia Beach, VA and was a competing member of Virginia Mock Trial from 2002 until 2006. Sam was a co-captain of the UVA team that won the 2006 national championship, and was an assistant coach in the program during the 2006-2007 season, during which Team 972 successfully defended its national title.
As an individual competitor, Sam won ten attorney awards, including three All American awards. In 2004 she was one of only six attorneys in the country selected to participate in the All-American round at the National Championship Tournament.
Sam attended Stanford Law School, where she won several moot court competitions and placed 2nd at the 2010 TYLA National Trial Competition. Following law school, Sam clerked for Judge Leonie M. Brinkema of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, Judge Merrick B. Garland on the D.C. Circuit, and Associate Justice Elena Kagan of the Supreme Court of the United States. She is currently a federal prosecutor in northern Virginia.
